Holiday Overspending in Full Swing
The average American spends $941 on the
holiday season, well above recommended levels for a nation where the mean
household income is $43,318, according the figures from the U.S. Census
Bureau*.
Visa USA says that spending on Visa
debit and credit cards during the first week of November 2004 rose to
approximately $22 billion, an increase of 15.7 percent over the same
period last year! $10.8 billion of that was on credit cards, while $9
billion was on debit cards.
Other research by Visa has found that
shopping and budgeting are the biggest contributors to stress during the
holidays, and less than 21 percent of the population plan for the
"incidental" expenses such as postage, greeting cards and wrapping
paper that can add up to a significant
expense.
